While many historians have called for a “critical reappraisal” of the Buffalo Soldiers due to their use by the United States government against Native Americans to suit its forceful expansionist objectives, we as an organization pay homage to the men who fought for a country they loved during a time when that love was sorely and routinely tested. We as African-Americans in Nebraska have also displayed courage and resilience in the face of fierce challenges. Widely mixed attitudes by whites, segregation, political victories, failures and unrest have provided high and low points in African- American lives and in the history of Nebraska as a whole. But like the Buffalo Soldier, we as a people remained true to the promise of our state and our nation. So, we honor the Buffalo Soldier with our logo, remembering the tragedies of the past while charging fearlessly into our future.
